
Daniel Tselyakov, described by Artsfile as “one of several young musicians in a deep
pipeline of keyboard talent coming out of Canada,” Daniel Tselyakov has captivated
audiences with his sensitivity, emotional depth, and dazzling virtuosity. Born into a
musical family, Daniel’s introduction to the piano began at the age of five under Aster
Lai’s guidance and his parents: mother, Alla Turbanova, and father, Canadian pianist
Alexander Tselyakov.
His formal training began at Brandon University’s School of Music under Dr. Michael
Kim, followed by a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory with Angela
Cheng. He holds a Master’s degree from the Université de Montréal under Jimmy
Brière. He later earned a Doctorate in Piano and Musicology at the University of Utah.
Throughout his education and career, Daniel has been the recipient of numerous
awards, include the President’s Scholarships at Oberlin Conservatory, Montreal
University, Utah University, Winnipeg Womens Music Club Winner, the Doris McLellan
Competition Scholarship for solo performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra,
Most Outstanding Piano Performance of J.S. Bach, the National Canadian Music
Competition.
His list of achievements includes victories at the international piano competitions, such
as the San Jose International Piano Competition, and the Livorno International Piano
Competition. Daniel has had the privilege of studying with some of the most respected pianists,
including Sergei Babayan, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Olga Kern, Marc-André Hamelin, and
John Perry. He has performed at the Festival of the Sound, the Virtuosi Concert Series,
the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival and
the Gijón International Piano Festival. His solo recitals have taken him to venues such
as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Glenn Gould Studio, Charles W.
Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts and various venues abroad.
A passionate chamber musician, Daniel frequently collaborates with ensembles,
including the Penderecki String Quartet, the Rolston String Quartet, the Gryphon Trio,
James Ehnes, Angela Cheng, and the New Zealand String Quartet.
Daniel is co-artistic director of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival. He also serves
as an academic staff member at Brandon University’s School of Music.
